Bad Gastein is an elegant spa-town and alpine resort popular for skiing, gambling, curing a backache or just idling in lovely surroundings. The natives of Bad Gastein believe their thermal waters and caves have the power to cure various disorders. According to legend, a hunter happened upon a mineral spring and saw its waters revive a wounded deer. Thus was born a new tourist attraction which has continued throughout the centuries. The ski area has 150 miles of groomed slopes, over 55 lifts and for the lazier hours of skiing, the mountains are spotted with more than 20 alpine hut restaurants. Excursions to Salzburg, Innsbruck and Venice can be arranged.
