August 9 – 23, 2001 Come experience Slovenia, the “Sunny Side of the Alps,” with this small, intimate group led by a friendly guide from the Czech Republic. Explore this tiny democracy snuggled between Italy, Austria, Hungary and Croatia – from its lofty alpine peaks, huts, waterfalls and lakes to its Roman ruins on the Adriatic Sea. The tour begins with an overnight in Vienna. The next day, drive through the Austrian Alps to picturesque Lake Bohinj, nestled at the base of the Julian Alps in Slovenia. Spend three nights with daily hikes into the mountains and around the lakes to prepare you for the challenges ahead! The next four days will be spent traversing Mt. Triglav (9,400 feet). You’ll take your time, carry only day packs and sleep and eat in alpine huts. Arrive in Kobarid, the small mountain village where Hemmingway set his novel, A Farewell to Arms. This area was the scene of a bloody front between the Italians and the Austrians during WWI. The next day, you’ll visit Lipica to tour the stables of the Lippizaner stallions. Then, it is a change of pace, as you spend two nights in seaside villages exploring Roman ruins, vineyards and warm water. The tour ends with two nights in Venice. Don’t miss this unique adventure! |
